When Backing Out, Do You Check The Sidewalk or Rely on a Backup Camera?

Do you turn your head to check the sidewalk before backing out of your driveway, or do you rely solely on your backup camera?

Your backup camera should be just that: a backup.

Just because the street is clear, doesn’t mean the sidewalk is. Never assume the sidewalk is clear.

Reversing or pulling out slowly while physically turning your head to check both directions can prevent you from striking a walker, jogger, cyclist, or motorized scooter.

During the day, your camera might not see far enough to warn you of an approaching pedestrian. A shrub or parked car may interfere with the camera’s ability to detect a moving object. At night or early morning, it may be too dark for your camera to see a pedestrian crossing your driveway.

While the fatality rate for pedestrians struck in a residential driveway is low, that number should be zero. These injuries and fatalities are entirely preventable and result from negligent driving.
