Why slow down in construction zones?

As we approach the end of August, remember that construction season is still going strong. That means reduced speed zones, increased congestion, temporary lane closures, temporary changes in traffic patterns, and even new temporary traffic signals.

Speeding in construction zones is one of the most dangerous things a driver can do. That construction crew is essentially a group of pedestrians on a high-speed road.

If someone is hit by a vehicle driving 10mph, 1 in 10 people pass away.
If someone is hit by a vehicle driving 20mph, 3 in 10 people pass away.
If someone is hit by a vehicle driving 40mph or higher, 7 in 10 people pass away.

Now think of how fast you’re driving on the thruway. If you strike a construction worker, what happens? If you last-minute swerve to avoid a worker or obstacle in the road and strike another vehicle obeying the lower speed limit, what happens?

Speeding, like distracted or impaired driving, makes you an unsafe driver.

Protect yourself, other drivers on the road, and construction workers:
• Obey posted speed limits
• Stay aware of your surroundings
• Signal early
• Merge slowly and carefully; no sudden jerking
• Know your blind spots and check frequently
• Reduce the number of lane changes
• Increase following distance so you have more room to merge
