What Are The Common Types of Car Accidents?

The National Injury Council* reports that in 2024, collisions between motor vehicles represented 79% of injuries and 74% of injury crashes, predominantly as the result of rear-end collisions and angle collisions. Single-vehicle crashes involving collisions with fixed objects, pedestrians, and non-collisions made up 53% of fatalities.

Here are 5 common types of car accidents:

Rear-End Collisions:

Where a vehicle crashes into the vehicle ahead, often due to distracted driving. (Texting, eating, sightseeing, changing music, talking to  passengers, focusing on a loose pet inside the vehicle.)

Head-on Collisions:

When the front of two vehicles crash together, often caused by distracted driving (drifting over the center lines), impaired driving (loss of control), unsafe passing, when turning, or if a vehicle is driving the wrong way down a one-way.

Single Vehicle Crashes:

Where one vehicle collides with a pedestrian or fixed object, often caused by distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, or swerving last-minute to avoid a road obstacle.

T-Bone Collisions:

When one vehicle is hit on the side by the front end of another vehicle, often at intersections after running a red light or stop sign, or when one vehicle fails to yield the right-of-way.

Sideswipe Collisions:

Where two vehicles driving side-by-side collide, often because of distracted driving, failure to look before changing lanes or merging, or after swerving last-minute to avoid an obstacle.

Most motor vehicle accidents are preventable when drivers eliminate distractions, focus on the road, properly maintain their vehicle, and never drive impaired by alcohol, drugs, or sleep-deprivation.
