Injuries and Fatalities Related to E-bikes and E-scooters

Places like Niawanda Park and the City of Tonawanda are even implementing strict speed limits to increase pedestrian and rider safety. As more e-bikes and e-scooters take to the street, it’s essential that you prioritize safe driving and eliminate distractions when behind the wheel.

Much of this should be common sense, yet so many drivers violate basic rules:

  • Do not race yellow lights; slow down. You already know that when a light turns yellow, it will then turn red. Risking your life and the lives of others on the road is never worth the 2-minutes it’ll take for the light to turn green again.
  • Do not run red lights. You can’t predict when a pedestrian will begin crossing the street or how quickly the light for cross traffic changes. Don’t be impatient and always stop for red lights.
  • Do not text, input map directions, or manually change music while driving. 2 seconds is all it takes for road conditions to change or for an accident to occur. Keep your eyes on the road.
  • Never get behind the wheel if impaired by marijuana, drugs, alcohol, or sleep deprivation. Impaired driving leads to slow reaction times, poor motor skills, and an inability to safely react to sudden changes in road conditions. (For example: if an animal runs into the street or you come across a pedestrian crossing the street after a bend in the road.)
  • Always stop for stop signs. They aren’t optional.
  • Check both ways before turning or crossing a residential intersection. Be vigilant for walkers, cyclists, and other vehicles.

Remember: Distracted driving and reckless driving are dangerous, even deadly, and puts you and other drivers at risk.
