Impaired Driving Series #2: Warning Signs of an Impaired Driver

In New York State, around 30% of fatal crashes are alcohol related.* But alcohol isn’t the only danger creating impaired driving. Drowsiness, marijuana, OTC drugs, recreational drugs, and distractions also lead to impaired driving. You already know to stay vigilant behind the wheel, monitoring both the road and surrounding vehicles so you can react smartly and appropriately.

If you notice a vehicle showing signs of impairment, increase your following distance and/or pass when safe to do so. An impaired driver may:

  • Drift, swerve, weave, or struggle to stay in their lane.
  • Brake too hard, too early, too late, or for no apparent reason.
  • Drive too fast, too slow, or vary their speed for no apparent reason.
  • Drive the wrong direction on a one-way.
  • Make wider, sharper, or illegal turns.
  • Failed to respond to traffic signals.
  • Follow too closely.
  • Change lanes without warning.
  • Fail to signal a turn or lane change.
