Summer Bonfire Slip and Fall Safety
Who doesn’t love a good summer bonfire? Even a small fire pit requires safety protocols. Regardless if you’re spending the evening with family or neighbors, when you invite someone onto your property, you’re responsible for their safety.
Reduce the risk of burn-related slip, trip, and fall injuries:
- Keep any fire pit at least 25 feet from anything flammable. Don’t just think about your car, home, or garage; consider sheds, fences, overhead wires, and low-hanging branches too.
- Avoid having a bonfire on windy days
- Stay at least 3-15 feet from the fire pit. Roasting marshmallows with your kids? Better safe than risk an injury: roast the marshmallows for them, then hand them the treat.
- Keeps pets far away.
- Remove any debris, trip hazards, or clutter from around the firepit.
- Position chairs on flat, even ground a healthy distance apart to reduce your trip and fall risk when getting up or moving around.
- Use porchlights, solar lights, or lanterns around the yard so guests can see trip and fall hazards like uneven walkways or grass, tree roots, sloped lawns, or hoses.
- Never leave a fire pit unintended, use accelerants, or burn anything that isn’t plain, natural wood.
No one wants a bonfire to turn into a burn injury. Safeguard against trips, slips, and falls.
